Aug 12 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Seedless Blood Mandarins

Have you heard of seedless blood mandarins?  Well, they are a hybrid mandarin that like blood oranges have a distinct deep orange-reddish flesh with a juicy, sweet taste….and of course, are seedless!  These Riverland grown mandarins have a very short season, and I mean very short – like 3 weeks!  They are definitely worth a try if you are lucky enough to see them in your local fruit and veg store as the last batch are coming through the markets this week.  Packed full of vitamin C to help boost your immune system, keep an eye out for these healthy one of a kind mandarins and enjoy!

Ruby Red Grapefruit

The ruby red grapefruit is one of the most popular red varieties of grapefruit as it is known for its vibrant red colour, which is a result of the fruit’s high levels of lycopene, a potent antioxidant. Like many citrus fruits, grapefruit is loaded with vitamin C and A which are nutrients shown to help boost your body’s immune system.  Ruby red grapefruit is sweeter than other grapefruit types, making it an excellent choice for people who don’t like the bitter taste of traditional grapefruit. It’s also seedless, making it easy to eat and enjoy.  Ruby red grapefruit can be enjoyed as part of your low calorie breakfast regime for a healthy start to your day, or added to many salads for that extra colour, sweetness and zing!

Bok Choy

Bok Choy is a type of Chinese cabbage and although it is typically available all year round, its peak season tends to be during the cooler months, from late autumn through to early spring.  Therefore, now is the best time to enjoy this vegetable at its freshest and most abundant to enjoy in a variety of Asian inspired dishes.  Not only is Bok Choy low in calories but contains a significant amount of vitamins C and K, making it a welcomed addition to many healthy diets. Bok Choy offers many health benefits through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Mashing Potatoes

As the chilly nights of winter are still with us, we opt for warm, hearty meals to enjoy and mashed potato is the perfect side or these winter warmer meals.  Mitolo Family Farms have convenient 1.5kg bags of mashing potatoes which stand out in an orange bag and make creamy, fluffy, mouth-watering mash.  These potatoes are full of nutritional benefits and will provide energy to help you feel full after your meal.  Look out for these orange bags of mashing potatoes when you are shopping next at your local fruit and veg store.
