Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Carrots

The humble carrot is available all year round so what better time to shine a spotlight on our locally grown varieties harvested straight out of the northern plains of Adelaide. Pictured here are the popular orange variety but did you know that carrots also come in other hues including purple, yellow, red and white.  This versatile vegetable is great to be eaten raw in many salads or cheese platters or used cooked for your roasts and hearty meals.  Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A, providing more than 200% of your daily requirement in just one carrot!

Tangelos

We are seeing beautiful tangelos in the market at the moment.   Did you know that a tangelo is a combination of a mandarin and a pomelo? (an ancestral variety of grapefruit) but have a sweet, tart and tangy taste as well as being deliciously juicy.  Tangelos are full of both vitamin C and A making them a healthy snack or great for salads, juices, cakes and muffins.  Tangelos are also great to pop inside your kids’ lunch boxes due to their extremely easy to remove peel and minimal seeds.  Tangelos can be recognised at your local fruit and veg store as they are slightly bell-shaped with a characteristic knob at the top so be sure to add these to your shopping basket.

Parsnips

Who doesn’t love a good roasted parsnip! Locally grown in the northern plains of Adelaide these root vegetables are the perfect addition to any winter dish and a must have for a Sunday roast. Sometimes mistaken for a white carrot, parsnips have a delicious, sweet taste that is best served roasted. Did you know that before sugarcane was widely available, Europeans used parsnips to make sweetener? With good supply in the market, now is a great time to add parsnips to your shopping basket this week!

Lemons

As we are still in citrus season, this week we are focusing on lemons which are locally grown in both the Riverland and Adelaide Hills.  Lemons are such a versatile fruit which can be used in many delicious desserts like lemon meringue pie, lemon slice, baked tart, cheesecake and the list goes on – simply delicious!  Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants which boost immunity and promote heart, digestive and liver health, lemons have amazing health benefits.  There is plenty of supply with great colour and flavour, so now is the best time to add some of these tangy delights to your shopping basket!
