August 22 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Iceberg LettuceIceberg Lettuce

For many of us the humble iceberg lettuce has been off the shopping list for weeks.  Supply has been short, prices have been uncharacteristically high and we have had to get creative to find alternatives. Well the iceberg lettuce is back! This week we are seeing much stronger supplies, greater quality and an excellent option for your weekly shop! Enjoy a burger topped with crunchy South Australian grown lettuce this week – look for them in your local fruit and veg store and enjoy.

Tangelo

Supplies of South Australian grown citrus continue to be in great supply at the markets this week with plenty of Tangelos to enjoy. This variety were created through the cross pollination of a tangerine and a pomelo (an ancestral variety of Grapefruit). Their flavour is tart and sweet, with medium acidity. They’re also a great variety to pop inside your kids’ lunch boxes due to their extremely easy to remove peel and minimal seeds.

Locally grown spring onions are in good supply at the markets this week. With a more mellower flavour than regular onions, they only need to be cooked very briefly – or most regularly used as garnish without any cooking at all.  Try them mixed with grated cheese and mayonnaise for a classic lunch sandwich option this week. And to get the most out of this veg, you can use the green tops as well as the small white bulb – keep them fresh by storing them in the fridge.

Packham Pears

The Adelaide Hills picked pear season continues with locally grown Packham Pears in good supply. Packham pears are a super versatile variety, but their flavour really shines when used in cooking. Try them baked or poached and you’ll taste the full potential of this humble pear variety. Or, for a quick and simple salad, slice pears and add to rocket and parmesan with a dash of balsamic oil.
