December 4 In Season at the Market
Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.
Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.
Zucchini
As summer is here, Zucchini is appearing more in the market and this versatile veggie is great to include in a variety of meals which can include vegetarian lasagne, salads, stir fry’s, fritters and slices. The health benefits of the zucchini boasts to be rich in vitamin B6, low in calories but rich in water and fibre, which is great for gut health. Zucchini can be enjoyed either raw or cooked whether you grill, bake, sauté or roast it. For a quick and easy summer meal, why not try these Cauliflower, Zucchini and Halloumi fritters with a fresh salad.
Lemons
Even though we are at the end of the citrus season, there is still a small supply of juicy lemons coming from the Adelaide Hills at the moment. If your Christmas festivities include a zesty lemon tart, lemon meringue pie or a delicious lemon slice, be sure to look out for locally grown lemons in your local fruit and veg store. As lemons have amazing health benefits and often Christmas is a time where we “overindulge” maybe squeezing fresh lemon juice into either hot or cold water will help flush those “extra” toxins from your liver.
Cherries
Last week we crowned our 2023 Cherry Queen and officially declared the Cherry season open. However, due to the recent storm and downpour, cherry supply will be short for the next few weeks, but rest assured the Christmas stocks are looking amazing. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to pick new season cherries straight from the tree last week and the size, taste, colour and sweetness was incredible. Cherries are always a family favourite at Christmas time and you won’t be disappointed with the quality! Enjoy!
Capsicum
Capsicums are a great vegetable to add taste and colour to a variety of salads, stir fry, pizza, platters, casseroles, muffins and the list goes on! At the market we are seeing a supply of the long yellow capsicums which have just started coming out from Virginia. The red bullhorn variety will increase in supplies from later this week. Be sure to look out for these bright capsicums at your local fruit and veg store to incorporate in your weekly meals.
