July 29 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Organic Bananas

Have you seen these bananas and wondered what the green tip means?  Well, the green edible wax is the mark of the ecological organic system, and the degradable food-grade cheese wax is completely safe. Organic farming involves much more than not using chemical pesticides and fertilisers, as it also helps to minimise any negative impacts on the environment, maintaining biodiversity of the ecosystem whilst also delivering a nutritious product.  Organically grown bananas have a sweeter and smoother texture than normal bananas so if you are looking for that great taste as well as environmentally friendly banana, then look out for these green tipped bananas at your local fruit and veg store.

Button Mushrooms

This week in the market update we are highlighting button mushrooms which are very popular with their mild, earthy taste and firm texture.  They can be eaten raw or cooked and can be enjoyed in many pastas, omelettes, salads, stir fries or pizza topping.  Whether you sauté, stir fry, grill or BBQ these delights, they add a great flavour and texture to your meal with the added benefit of being packed full of vitamin D which help the body absorb calcium and promote bone health.
