June 17 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Pick Me Mandarins

When you are grocery shopping next, keep an eye out for these boxes of “Pick Me” mandarins.  Not only are they sustainably packaged in 100% recyclable cardboard punnet, but they are also biodegradable, eco friendly and proceeds from every punnet sold goes toward planting and growing new trees – how great is that? Bache Bros in partnership with Trees for Life SA have made this Earth friendly option a reality.  Not only are these conveniently packaged but the mandarins are sweet, juicy and a healthy snack for the whole family to enjoy.  Be sure to keep an eye out for these “Pick Me” mandarins and do your bit for the environment.

Red Onion

Red onions are that versatile vegetable that is a staple in the pantry.   These purplish-red onions are available all year round, that can be eaten raw in many salads, salsas and dips or sauteed in stir fry, fajitas, pastas and pizzas. You can also “pickle” red onion which is delicious on sandwiches and burgers.  The options are endless! The health benefits of the trusty red onion is also impressive with red onions being full of sulphur compounds that protect the body from ulcers and various cancers.  Add them to your shopping basket when next at your local fruit and veg store to keep up your supply in the pantry.

Kalettes

Harvested locally in the Adelaide Hills, kalettes are an amazing, versatile vegetable that can be eaten raw, baked, stir-fried, grilled or steamed. If you are unfamiliar with kalettes, they are a combination of brussels sprouts and kale, providing a mild, sweet and nutty taste and are best served with a dash of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. We are seeing great supply of kalettes in the market so now is a great time to give them a try!
