Oct 28 In Season at the SA Produce Market
Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.
Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.
Jack O Lantern Pumpkins
It’s that spooky time of year and as more and more Aussies are embracing the tradition of Halloween so too are your local fruit and veg stores. This week we see plenty of stock of the specially grown Halloween Pumpkins at the South Australian Produce market floor making their way to fruit and veg retailers all over Adelaide. The Jack O’ Lantern pumpkin is an outstanding variety for decorative uses; fruits are uniformly round and a rich dark orange colour with very little flesh. Look for them in-stores this week.
Coriander
Coriander is not everyone’s favourite herb but certainly adds some punch to many Asian, Oriental and Middle Eastern cooking dishes! Coriander leaves, also referred to as cilantro, are great for topping rice dishes, curries, soups, stews or salads and are a must, if you love this herb, to the Vietnamese roll – Banh mi. Grown right here in the Northern Adelaide Plains look for fresh Coriander at your local fruit and veg store.
Peach
For those that have been waiting for the stone fruit season, wait no more because we have Riverland grown peaches at the markets and headed to local fruit and veg stores. Not only do peaches taste fantastic, but they are also rich in Vitamin A and their skin is full of fibre. If your peach is not ripe enough for eating leave it out on the kitchen bench – but if it is ready for eating and you have too many – remember to store them in the fridge. And if you are after some inspiration, try this delicious peach donut recipe you will thank us for it! www.abetterchoice.com.au/recipes/peach-donuts/
Broccoli
If you’re looking to add some extra vitamins into your diet, then maybe consider eating more SA grown broccoli. High in vitamins C and K, they’re a great, healthy addition to any dish from a tasty side on your Sunday Roast to a crunchy addition raw in a salad. Good supplies means for those watching their budget – it’s a good time to put them back in the weekly basket buy.
