September 5 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Zucchini

Man at markets holding tray of zucchiniIn great news we are seeing a good supply of zucchini coming through the market this week. While many would consider zucchini a staple vegetable in their pantry, did you know that it is actually a fruit? As a variation of the summer squash, zucchini is harvested in the immature stages of growth while the seeds are still soft. Rich in fibre, zucchini can help with digestion and is a fantastic alternative to pasta sheets when making a zucchini lasagna!

Mandarin

Citrus season is still going strong  – you will find plenty of it at the Royal Adelaide Show this week. Pick up a South Australian grown mandarin on the Yellow Brick Road trail for a delicious tasting snack on the go. With potassium levels similar to a banana, mandarins are rich in health-boosting compounds and can help with cardiac health by reducing blood pressure.

Rhubarb

If you’re looking to add a bit of tartness into your next dish, then consider using rhubarb. This vibrant pink-red fruit has an interesting, sometimes bitter, taste that can be beautifully incorporated into both sweet and savoury dishes. Whether you’re pulling out some old rhubarb recipes, or looking to experiment in the kitchen this week, look for locally grown now available in your local fruit and veg store.

Beetroot

The hearty beetroot can often be overlooked, South Australian grown is in good supply at the markets this week. Their vibrant and rich shades add great colour to your dish, along with their fantastic earthy flavours. Roast beetroot goes great with pumpkin, feta and rocket in a salad – or simply add them to your roast vegetable medley.

Mushrooms

If you’re a lover of mushrooms, then you will love that these versatile veg are available all year round! Right now, South Aussie mushrooms are tasting fantastic – Button, Large BBQ, Portabella, Swiss  – it doesn’t matter, they’re all ready and waiting to be eaten. If you are heading to the Royal Adelaide Show this week visit the Horticultural Stage in the Goyder Pavilion at 12:30pm on Friday to see MasterChef Callum Hann cooking up a quick and easy mushroom dish!
